Celebrating Blog Action Day: Global Warming a Distracting Argument

Posted on October 15th, 2007 in Rant by Bret

Today is the official Blog Action Day. A day when bloggers around the world come together to raise awareness of a single topic: the environment.

Seems like these days that you can’t discuss the environment without discussing global warming. Strong evidence supports the theory of global warming and yet nay-sayers abound. The problem with a global warming debate is the distraction it causes. Instead of taking smart steps towards protecting the environment such as burning fewer fossil fuels, developing renewal clean sources of energy, and recycling trash we get wrapped in a debate no one can win. And obviously, when you spend your time and energy debating, no one takes any action.

People! We’re wasting time and energy trying to win a debate no one will ever win. Stop the insanity! Stop wasting time! Stop the debate and face that fact that fossil fuels cannot last forever, burning fossil fuels makes the air dirty and ugly, and fossil fuel consumption makes us dependent on foreign countries. Regardless of your position on global warming these three points you cannot deny. Stop the distracting debate of global warming and focus the obvious points no one can deny. And then maybe we can start taking making meaningful progress on protecting our environment.

We can agree on your 3 points. While the issue is a global one, foreign countries have us a over a barrel (pun intended) when it comes to our dependancy on oil. The easiest way to stay out of the Middle East and their quarrels is to find alternative forms of energy, and ethanol is not the answer.

Solar is being tapped more as new science is helping bring the costs done, but the ROI takes too long for most residential consumers to consider it. Wind power is another option, but the same people that scream about our need to find new energy sources don’t want a wind farm in their backyard.

Since money talks, the US government needs to come up with jaw-dropping financial incentives to individuals and/or companies that can come up with cost effective environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels that can be produced and distributed on a national scale. This needs to be another “race to the moon” type event.

We’ve watched the 4-part series “Future Boston” on local TV show “Chronicle”. Together with MIT, they visited Portland Oregon, Vancouver, Seoul Korea, & Ireland who are way ahead of Boston.
Then Massachusetts Restaurant Owners Association is fighting a proposed bill mandating restaurants to recycle glass bottles and metal cans. They say it takes too much time & staff. Another ‘we want the govt to do it”. If we can’t comply with simple recycling, why should we be concerned with global warming? Other countries are so far ahead of the U.S., and if Boston’s mentality is an example, I can see why.
