I Love YouTube, I Hate YouTube
Everyone has something that consumes them to such a degree that they can waste hours and not even know it. For me, it’s YouTube.com. I love the seemingly endless piles of entertainment, and I hate it for the exact same reason. The kiss of death to my personal productivity is an email from a friend with a line such as, “Hey, you really have to check out this YouTube video.” If I follow the link, I’m almost certain to get sucked into the black hole called YouTube.
Just the other day I was finishing up a few emails before heading to bed when I saw a new message from my brother. It was only 9:30 PM so I had plenty of time to check out the link he sent to this instructional guitar video:
Okay, cool I’ve always liked that song. Of course I couldn’t resist the other videos I noticed in the scrolling sidebar. Before I knew it I found this amazing guitar clip:
Wow! That was amazing. I wonder if that guy has a CD. Off to Google for a small break and search, search, search. Wait a second I wonder what I could find in the way of drums on YouTube?
Amazing! Terry Bozio and Chad Wackerman two of my favorite drummers. How I got from drummers to this next clip completely escapes me but I had a serious laugh when I found it:
Suddenly I realize, it’s very quiet in the house. All of the lights are off except for the one where I’m sitting. Holy smokes! It’s 12 midnight! YouTube I hate you! But I do have time for one more video, which is probably something similar to what this guy said, “Just one more wave.” And one more wave is probably all you got.

Ah, I too have become memorized watching YouTube. I go there just to look at one specific clip and find myself following a thread of other clips that have no relevance to my original reason for going to YouTube in the first place.
