Apple Releases Beta Version of Safari Browser for Windows

Posted on July 30th, 2007 in Review by Bret

Do I really need another web browser installed on my computer? I’m already an avid FireFox fan and keep Microsoft Internet Explorer around for that small population of I.E. only web sites. So why install a third browser on my computer?

  • I do web development and need to verify my design with every browser possible?
  • I do computer related work and need to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field?
  • I’m curious about Apple’s browser?
  • Because it’s there?

Honestly, I can answer yes to each of these reasons but as of right now, the overwhelming reason — because it’s there.

NStar Offers Green Power and Charges Extra

Posted on July 27th, 2007 in Rant by Bret

The Wednesday edition of the Boston Globe (7-25-2007) published a front page story about NStar offering it’s customers the opportunity to buy wind generated power. Good news for anyone that wants to help the environment by promoting clean renewable forms of energy. Of course, as one might expect, doing the “right thing” comes at a price.

Did You Notice Craig’s List Was Missing?

Posted on July 25th, 2007 in Rave by Bret

Power equipment failure left tens of thousands of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) San Francisco area customers wondering, “Huh? Who turned out the lights?” The power failure even managed to take out PG&E’s own office, which is funny on several levels. The worse part of the entire disaster wasn’t PG&E’s office darkness, but rather the darkness felt with the absence of several bay area based web sites.

How Long Can I Hold Off Reading the Final Installment of Harry Potter?

Posted on July 23rd, 2007 in Rant by Bret

Nearly everyone knows (fan or not) that the final installment of the Harry Potter book series was released over the weekend (specifically July 21, 2007). Everyone in my house, except for my wife, is a big fan and could not wait for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7). Now that it’s here, my daughters are taking turns with the book which has worked well so far; however, I haven’t tried to take my turn so book sharing might fall apart as soon as I enter the mix.

How to Take a Good Photo for eBay or Craig’s List

Posted on July 20th, 2007 in Rave by Bret
Darren Rowse at Prologger has started a series of posts to help rediscover your blogging groove. As for the posts here at Brothers In Blog, I don’t think we’ve lost our groove — yet. Nevertheless Darren’s suggestion is a great way to generate some new content and perhaps a little extra traffic. Today’s topic is to write a tip post.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but on sites such as eBay and Craig’s List a good picture is often the difference between closing the sale and not. But how do you take good photos without high end photography gear or the knowledge of a professional photographer? Easy, follow these simple steps and your digital photos should improve significantly and those online sales might just go a little smoother.

What Blogs Do I Routinely Read and Recommend?

I don’t read nearly as many blogs as I should but those that I do read are read on a fairly consistent basis. Of course this statement begs the question, “What blogs does brother number two of Brothers In Blog read on a routine schedule?”

Capital Gunman Dead: Does the Photo Go Too Far?

Posted on July 18th, 2007 in Rant by Bret

Shots rang out in the Denver State Capital yesterday (7/16/07) afternoon when a crazed gunman claiming he was “the emperor” was shot dead by State Troopers. A disturbing incident, which you can read about in greater depth at the Denver Post; however, it’s the post-kill photo that I find highly disturbing — dead man laying in clear view.

While the photo is not outrageously graphic, is “that” photo completely necessary? Do we really need to see the dead gunman — laying dead on the ground?

Verizon FiOS: An Almost Install Review

I’ve been interested in the FiOS service from Verizon since I first heard about it over a year ago. The new offering from Verizon brings fiber optic technology to your home with a trio of features to chose from: broadband Internet access, phone, and television. Verizon has bundled all 3 of these features into a very attractive introductory package of $99 a month with free installation. Based on this “surface” information I estimated my potential savings at nearly 50%; however, if you read the fine print, and try to compare apples to apples, the savings isn’t that great.

What are the Top 5 2008 Election Issues I DON’T Want to Hear About?

Today’s topic is to answer a reader question, or if they are no reader questions, ask yourself a question.

Yesterday it was all about the top 5 issues for the 2008 Presidential election. My list obviously omitted some “traditional and typical” topics that the candidates, and press, like to cover. That being said, what are the top 5 issues I DON’T want to hear about during this election?

Top 5 Election Issues for 2008: Scooter Libby is NOT One of Them

Shortly after the Scooter Libby’s commuted sentence fiasco I heard a television reporter wonder if this topic was now an issue for the 2008 election. Good grief! Say it isn’t so! As if the candidates needed another pointless issue to wax and wane about; however, if they don’t talk about Scooter “above-the-law” Libby, what should they talk about?
