Second Life — It Really is Just a Game

Posted on April 26th, 2007 in Rant by Bret

At this point in time I think nearly every major newspaper or magazine has done a story on Second Life. Some articles criticize the latest online craze as a wasteland of social outcasts, introverts, and perverts. Other articles praise Second Life as a bold new frontier bringing the metaverse to the masses. If, by chance, you haven’t heard of Second Life (SL as the “residents” like to call it), then please allow me to explain.

Virginia Tech - The Blame Game Begins

Posted on April 23rd, 2007 in Rant by Barry

I’m sure that most of us were horrified with last week’s shootings at Virginia Tech. While we’ve grown accustomed to hearing about some nut job somewhere shooting a fellow classmate or teacher in school, the shear death toll number at Virginia Tech by a single gunman was overwhelming. It’s because of this body count and lack of a clear cut reason for the rampage that now has gun control advocates taking center stage again blaming current laws or lack thereof for these deaths.

Low Votes or Not, American Idol was Done with Sanjaya

Posted on April 19th, 2007 in Rant by Bret

I wanted Sanjaya gone from the moment he made the top 24. Unfortunately, week after week he managed to sneak past the low vote only to return and torture me again. With each new week came a new hairdo and another terrible performance. I started to get the feeling he was almost daring people to vote him off. Did he know something about the voting mechanism that I didn’t? Probably not because how America votes and how the votes are counted is one of Idol’s best kept secrets, and for good reason: the show is fixed.

Drive This New Benz While We Fix Yours

Posted on April 16th, 2007 in Rant by Bret

I had an American Idol post lined up for today but decided to put it on the back burner after this morning’s car repair experience.

I dropped off my car for a planned repair this morning. As a service perk, the dealer provided a very nice loaner car while they worked on mine. Oddly enough, the loaner was much nicer than the last one they gave me which got me thinking: Is this loaner a service perk or another way to sell me a new car?

Need help choosing? Read the User Reviews

Posted on April 12th, 2007 in Review by Barry

Before Al Gore created the Internet (now there’s some hot air), I would scour my library of Consumer Reports magazines to check their reviews on a product I was getting ready to buy. My wife can attest that I wouldn’t make any major purchase until I consulted this consumer Bible. Unfortunately, by the time the magazine was delivered to my mailbox some manufacturers had already changed a model I was considering or even worse…discontinued it. This all changed with online consumer review websites and reviews solicited by online retailers of their customers.

What Have I Read Lately? The Thinking Blog

Posted on April 9th, 2007 in Review by Bret

Online for a couple of weeks and it appears that all I’ve done is “rant.” I haven’t raved and certainly haven’t reviewed anything. Therefore it’s time to switch gears and review something — anything — how about one of my favorite blogs: Ilker Yoldas’s The Thinking Blog (your daily dose of fuel to keep you thinking)?

Starbucks: Evil Empire or Marketing Genius

Posted on April 5th, 2007 in Rave by Barry

Prior to the tragic events of 9/11, I would say that I was a residential coffee drinker. What I mean by that is that my consumption of java was limited to a cup in the morning before heading to work and then another cup after dinner. If my wife and I decided to indulge in some overpriced dessert at our local eatery then I might wash it down with some more joe.

Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy has always had an issue with Red Sox pitching ace Curt Schilling. I don’t know the root of his ill feelings but Shaughnessy now has a new reason to hate Schilling — Curt has blog!
